What is Lino Printing?

Lino printing, also known as linocut, is a printmaking method in which a design is carved into a block of linoleum. The raised areas of the linoleum are then inked and pressed onto paper to create a print. You can repeat the printing process as many times as you like using various colours to make a wonderful set of prints. Lino printing is a versatile and accessible art form that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels and is an excellent entry into creative practises.

To create a lino print, you will need…

  • Lino block
  • Carving tools
  • Block printing ink
  • Brayer (a roller used to apply ink)
  • Paper
  • Baren or printing press

You can use a pencil or marker to draw your design on the lino block or just grab the carving tools and wing it!

When carving, it is important to remember that the raised areas of the lino will be printed, and the carved areas will be left blank (the white space). Start by carving away the areas of your design that you do not want to print. Your print will be a mirror image of the cut, something to bear in mind, especially if you’re wanting to make text.

Once you have finished carving, you can ink your block. Begin by pouring the ink onto a smooth flat and clean area, or an inking tray, and roll the brayer through the ink until there is an even coating of ink on the roller. Use the brayer to roll the ink onto the lino block making sure to cover all the raised areas.

It’s now time to create the print! Grab a sheet of printing paper, and place it over the lino block. If you’re using a baren, roll this repeatedly over the lino block to transfer the ink onto the paper. Carefully peel the paper up from the lino block to reveal your print! Repeat the process until you have enough prints.
